More about Karafuu Hotel Beach Resort Zanzibar

Karafuu Hotel Beach Resort opened in 1995 and is aptly named after the Swahili word for cloves, karafuu, which grow in abundance on Zanzibar Island. Karafuu is ideally located on a blissful stretch of palm-fringed beach with white sand and dazzling blue water – just what you’re after.
The spacious, cool reception area under makuti (palm thatch) is impressive, especially when you’re visiting Karafuu Hotel Beach Resort for the first time. You instantly know you’re in a top-notch hotel. There is an enormous pool around which you’ll find guests soaking up the sun. The clientele is largely international, so you’ll hear a variety of accents. A little further along is the beach with a generous strip of sand with sun lounges set a good distance apart from each other.
Warm hospitality comes naturally to the Swahili staff, who are impeccably dressed in long, robed uniforms. You are welcomed with the traditional greeting of karibu with the resort staff on hand to assist with a smile.

Karafuu Hotel Beach Resort has all the expected facilities: fully-equipped Diving center, boutiques, tennis courts, gymnasium and Spa. The rooms are extremely comfortable and styled in a modern Zanzibar theme. They provide a welcome relief from the sun when you’ve spent the day by the pool or diving and lazing on the beach.
The eastern side of the island is greatly influenced by the tide. You can sunbathe on the beach and slip straight into the water and swim far out when the tide is high. When the tide recedes, you have to wade out to the fringing reef, which can be fun if you want to look for marine life in the shallows.
Karafuu Hotel Beach Resort is one of the few hotels on the east coast where you can enjoy a comfortable and safe swim in the ocean at low tide. A concrete path in front of the hotel leads you from the beach to a permanent natural depression in the ocean bed just 200 meters offshore, offering a giant natural swimming pool deep enough for small boats to moor in.

More about Zanzibar Island

More about Zanzibar Island
The word “Zanzibar” is derived from the old form “Zengbat” which initially meant the Eastern Coast of Africa. It is probably a Persian word “Zeng” meaning black and “Bar” means land or region. The Arab version was Zinjibar.
Zanzibar is a Semi-autonomous part of the United Republic of Tanzania in East Africa. It is the Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, which comprises two main island, Unguja (Informally referred to as Zanzibar) and its sister island Pemba as well as about fifty smaller islets. The land area of the two main islands is approximately 2 332 square kilometers of which Unguja is 1 464 square kilometers. Zanzibar (Unguja) is mainly a low lying island, with its highest point at 120 meters above sea level.
A white sandy beach encircles the island which is full of palm trees and dotted with huge ancient baobab trees. Long stretches of beaches are found at the East and North Coast of Zanzibar Island. The Capital of Zanzibar, located on the island of Unguja is Zanzibar Town (also well known as Stone Town) and its historic centre; it is located about 35 kilometers off the coast of mainland Tanzania.
The most commonly practiced religion is Islam. 80% of Zanzibar’s population follows the laws of Islam. The remainder is a mix of Hindus and Christians. Zanzibar’s history was influenced by the Arabs, Persians, Indians, Portuguese, British and the African mainland.
Zanzibar’s local people are an incredible mixture of ethnic backgrounds, indicative of her colourful history. Zanzibaris speak Kiswahili (but English is also widely spoken), a language which is spoken extensively in East Africa. Many believe that the purest form is spoken in Zanzibar as it is the birth place of the language.
Zanzibar is a few degrees south of the Equator and enjoys a tropical climate that is largely dominated by the Indian Ocean monsoon.
Zanzibar Town, also well known as Stone Town, is the oldest functioning Town in East Africa. The International airport is also situated about 10 minutes’ drive from Stone Town. Stone Town was declared a World Heritage Stine in 2001, is home to a mixture of cultures, architectures and languages.
Over time Stone Town has developed from a small fishing village on the peninsula of Unguja’s west coast to a bustling town rich in history.
Highlights that Stone Town offers is the main City market which was opened in 1904, the Anglican Church of Christ built in 1897, the Sultan’s Palace Museum built in the late 1890’2, the House of Wonders, the Africa House formerly the English Club, Forodhani Park and the Old Fort that was built by Arabs for defense against the Portuguese.
When to plan your next visit to Zanzibar Island
Zanzibar is truly a year-round tropical Island destination, with the coolest months being around June though to October when temperatures averages 26 degrees Celsius. During the hottest months temperatures can rise up to 30 degrees Celsius from around December to March.
Global warming that has effective climate changes across the world has also made it near impossible to predict the weather patterns on Zanzibar in advance, but traditionally during November Zanzibar had a short rain season, and between April and June the long rain season. Rain in Zanzibar are mostly short, sharp showers in the morning or afternoon, followed by the return of sunshine.
The high season on Zanzibar is June, July and August, and mid-November to early February with Easter weekend in April also attracting many tourist. Most of the beach resorts and hotels on Zanzibar Island offers great discounts for advance bookings (if booked 60 days in advance), but with the rise in popularity of Zanzibar Island as a tropical paradise destination with many visitors from South Africa, Europe and North America, getting the best value for money special package deals will require more advance planning.
Visas and required travel documents for a visit to Zanzibar
For travel to Zanzibar all travellers will require a valid passport, expiring more than 6 months after your return date and with at least 3 open pages. South African passport holders (and some other nationalities) are exempted from visa formalities for Tanzania. Other passports may require a visa – please enquire from us.

Zanzibar currency & Banking
Zanzibar runs on a dual currency economy. Both the local Tanzanian Shilling and US$ are acceptable forms of payment. Before travelling, it is best to ensure that you have US$ currency with you as Shillings are only obtainable in Tanzania. It is recommended to have US$ cash in small denominations with you, as very few places will accept credit/debit cards or travellers cheques and often change (in US$ or Shillings) can prove problematic if paying with large denominated notes. The larger resort hotels on Zanzibar will accept major credit cards (ie, Visa or MasterCard) for payment of miscellaneous items and/services, yet please do not only rely on your credit card for general payments on Zanzibar – as mentioned above, cards are not widely acceptable as a form of payment.
The banking hours (for banks in Stone Town) at most commercial banks are: Mondays to Fridays – 09h00 to 15h30, Saturdays – 09h00 to 12h00. ATM’s are found at most of the Banks in Stone Town, but you may come to find that they are often offline.
New regulations at Zanzibar Airport only allows for payments of Visas & or Airport taxes possibly not included in your Airline ticket to be done using your credit card – cash is no longer accepted.
Photography on Zanzibar
Zanzibar offers spectacular photo opportunities for you to capture your tropical Island holiday!
Please remember to be sensitive when photographing people. The Zanzibar locals are renowned for being friendly, however it is courteous to ask permission before snapping away. Some Government areas and sites (i.e. Police Station and Post/ Army sites and State Houses) are prohibited from being photographed. The best would be to ask your guide before taking any pictures when you pass through these sites.
Electricity and plugs used on Zanzibar
The electricity on Zanzibar is the standard 220 – 240 V AC, 50 Hz, as found in South Africa and most places in the world.
The 2 point plugs found in RSA will connect in most hotels to the electricity plugs found on Zanzibar, but an adaptor will be needed for the 3 point plugs. Depending on your hotel you might need a British (3 square pins) adaptor.

Thank you very much for helping us plan this very lovely trip. It was indeed too short, but magical nonetheless! We fell in love with the island and the people, but more importantly we fell in love with each other. Being able to do our engagement photo shoot there was the cherry on top – we were lucky enough to secure a professional photographer who happens to be South African in origin 🙂

This was amazing – Karafuu was great, the staff were friendly, the food was great and lots of Safari beers and gin and tonics were enjoyed! 🙂

Here are some pics from the week, we are certain a return to Zanzibar is in our future.

Regards
Phumzile and Mcebo”

“Super efficient, professional tour operator

We recently went on a family holiday to Zanzibar and decided to stay along the east coast of the island, finally choosing Karafuu Beach Resort. We received quotations from a number of tour operators, with Dream World Adventures being the most competitive. Not only were their prices the best, the service from Dawie was highly efficient, professional and always personal. We especially enjoyed the traveller tips and suggestions included in the final confirmations. Highly recommended and will definitely use again in the future!! Thank you 🙂
